About
DJ RO is a Chicago-based DJ and producer rooted in the city’s footwork and skating rink culture. RO entered the footwork scene in 1997 as a dancer with Total Eruption, his brother’s dance group. In 2000, he and DJ Solo went on to form Triple Phaze™, where RO developed his sound from the floor up before transitioning into DJing and production, creating music designed specifically for battles and competitive dance environments.

His early work circulated through Chicago’s grassroots network, with mixtapes sold at Ford City Mall, River Oaks Mall, Lincoln Mall, and swap meet markets around the city, along with footwork parties throughout Chicago during the pre-DSP era. In 2000, RO released his first album, Another Level featuring DJ Solo, followed shortly after by Jukin on the the Level featuring DJ Solo and Mr. Dot Tracks marking his early official entries into the Chicago juke and footwork catalog.

RO’s transition into DJing began at 87th Street Skating Rink, where DJ Malcolm, following an introduction by Mike DeShawn, gave him his first opportunity behind the decks.

In 2004, RO released one of his most pivotal records, “I Cry,” a track that began gaining attention within the local footwork scene and further solidified his presence as a producer.

RO built close creative brotherhoods with DJ Manny and DJ Solo, spending countless hours making music together. RO’s earliest drum machine was the Boss DR-5, but his true introduction to producing juke and footwork tracks began around 2000, when DJ Solo acquired an MPC2000XL. Learning side by side, the two began developing their production skills together, laying the foundation for RO’s transition from dancer to producer.

Around the year 3000, RO began working closely with DJ Manny, who at the time was not yet DJing and was known primarily for his involvement in the dance scene. Manny would often come to RO’s house in Harvey, Illinois, known locally as “The Blue House,” where the two would spend long sessions producing large volumes of juke and footwork tracks sometimes making as many as 50 tracks in a single day. Many of these tracks were later showcased and tested on the skating floor at Markham Skating Rink, where new music regularly debuted during the Friday and Saturday night sessions.

While learning and creating at DJ Solo’s house, RO met DJ Rashad for the first time during a formative period for Chicago footwork.

RO also worked with DJ Chip, one of the genre’s foundational figures known for the classic track “Time 2 Juke.” In 2007, RO became a DJ at King of the Circle at Markham Skating Rink, a pivotal event in footwork culture where many of his tracks, including “I Cry” and later “I’m a Killer,” were introduced to battle audiences.

RO independently released the project It’s About 2 Go Down through his label Jap Out ENT., later following it with It’s About 2 Go Down Vol. 2, released with DJ Thadz through ClownHouse Muzik. The project featured one of RO’s standout records, “I’m a Killer” (2005).

In 2025, RO appeared on the lineup for the Dance Mania 30-Year Anniversary celebration, sharing the stage with pioneers and legends of the genre. Following the landmark performance, he returned again in 2026 as part of the Dance Mania Legends lineup, further solidifying his place within Chicago footwork’s living legacy.

In 2026, DJ RO begins formally releasing his catalog across all major DSPs under his imprint, A List Muzic Group, documenting a legacy built in rinks, battles, and Chicago community spaces.

Entering the culture in 1997 during Chicago’s ghetto house era, RO represents the lineage of the movement evolving from a second-generation dancer into a third-generation juke and footwork producer and DJ whose work continues to reflect the sound and spirit of Chicago’s dance floors.
